Taking as its starting point the 1915 Black Square by the Russian painter Kazimir Malevich, this exhibition looked at how abstraction grew from a radical ideology suggesting a new democracy of art to become a diffuse and varied global language throughout the last century to current times. Among the various international artists who explored abstraction in their practice, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Max Bill were chosen as the Swiss representatives. The exhibition offered a compressed and comprehensive examination of the leap artists have taken in their visual language within a century and made viewers ponder where this journey might lead next.
